Champagne & Sparkling
In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest. France’s most northerly wine region, Champagne is now home to 15,000 growers and 290 ‘houses’. A blend of grape varieties is usually required: white Chardonnay to add fruit and elegance, and two reds – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – to provide body and backbone.

2006 Krug, Clos Du Mesnil (Gift Box)
Slated for release later this year, Krug's 2006 Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil unwinds in the glass with aromas of buttered citrus fruit, crisp green pear, warm pastry, freshly baked bread, apricot and licorice. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, the 2006's comparatively extroverted and gourmand bouquet is in contrast to its deep, chiseled and tightly wound palate, and it's here that the site really dominates the vintage signature. Long, sapid and penetrating, complemented by a pillowy pinpoint mousse, this is a brilliant Blanc de Blancs that has been well worth the wait. By the standards of young Clos du Mesnil, it's already quite approachable and can already be drunk with considerable satisfaction. - Wine Advocate

Krug, Grande Cuvée (170th Edition)
“A lovely ferny nose and breezy seaside raciness. Bright yellow fruit on entry, a flicker of preserved lemon and cooked quince adding vibrancy. Then comes the Krug richness which spreads over the palate. The balance hovers tantalisingly between tactile precision and soft warm fruit and the finish reveals layers of cinnamon-tinctured blancmange, and the creaminess goes on. Rich but light on its feet. A definite buy and a keeper. The 2014 base harvest was hit by sour rot and mildew in mid-summer. Intense selection meant Krug had to reduce the amount of Meunier to half its Grande Cuvée average, and reserve wines (representing 45% of the final wine) back to 1998 buttress the balance and complexity; a triumph of blending. It also relies heavily on 2013 to add life and structure. Main harvest: 2014. 45% reserves. Aged for six years on lees. Disgorged: Spring 2021.”
96/100, Tim Hall, Decanter Magazine
“Lots of acidity! Extremely lively and brisk. But it’s actually readier than most young Grandes Cuvées I have tasted at this relatively early stage with sumptuous texture actually. Very clean and fresh. Bone dry but broachable and quite charming within the Krug ethos. Really quite friendly. One of my favourites of this line-up!”

1999 Champagne Louis Roederer, Cristal Vinothèque, Brut
One of the finest Champagnes I have ever brought to my lips, the 1999 Cristal bursts from the glass with fresh hazelnut and apple scents. Elegant, deep, and silky-textured, this medium to full-bodied beauty is immensely concentrated, pure, packed with apple flavours, and astoundingly long in the finish. Louis Roederer does not display a disgorgement date or consumer-friendly lot number on its non-vintage Brut. This is regrettable as it has consistently been one of the finer bottlings in this category. Pierre-Antoine Rovani, Wine Advocate (December 2005)

The Millésime Rare is an absolutely delicious Champagne, and a wonderful example of the quality of the 2008 vintage. 2008 Dom Perignon Rosé Lady Gaga Limited Edition (with Gift Box)The creative collaboration between Dom Pérignon and Lady Gaga continues this year. Finding harmony in a tense tension, they gave new life to their shared desire to create works with extremes and duality. To create yourself and your own story. And keep spinning the story over and over again. This is what Dom Pérignon embodies in every vintage, and what Lady Gaga does with boundless energy.
The 2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé is magnificent. Rich and deep in the glass, the 2008 offers up an exotic mélange of aromas and flavors. Sweet red cherry, mint, orange peel and rose petal all grace this beguiling beauty. Bright acids and a little less still red Pinot (21%) than in most recent editions yields a Rosé that is delicate and light on its feet, with less of the vinous intensity that marked vintages such as 2006. There is a classic feeling of austerity in the 2018 that is mesmerizing. Drink 2026-2048.

2004 Dom Pérignon P2
The 2004 Dom Pérignon P2 is drinking beautifully on release, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet orchard fruit, fresh peach, pastry cream, buttered toast and cotton candy that display a less reductive profile than the original disgorgement. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming, with an ample, enveloping core of fruit, succulent acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, sapid finish. Forward and giving, there's no obvious reason to defer gratification. 95/100. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
Delivers mandarin orange, ripe cherry, raspberry and apricot fruit notes, which are an exuberant burst of flavor at the entry point of this otherwise refined and subtle Champagne. The expressive fruit is joined on the lacy mousse by toast, pastry cream, Earl Grey tea leaf and an underpinning of minerally chalk and smoke. Lithe and graceful on the palate, but with a dancer's sense of restrained power. Drink now through 2037. 97/100 Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

2002 Dom Pérignon
The 2002 Dom Pérignon is unforgettable. Rich, sumptuous and flamboyant to the core, the 2002 captures all of the radiance of a year in which ripeness in the Chardonnays was pushed to the edge. The 2002 is oily and viscous on the palate, with tremendous textural resonance in all of its dimensions.
Tropical fruit, pastry and exotic floral notes all build as the 2002 opens up with air. I can still remember the first time I tasted the 2002, here in the Hautvillers cloister, with former Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy. It was thrilling back then, and is every bit as memorable today.

2002 Pol Roger, Brut
It should come as no surprise that Pol Roger have delayed the release of their 2002 Vintage Champagne until 2012, in defiance of all commercial logic and the dictates of cash-flow. The reason is simple; 2002 is the best vintage in Champagne since 1990, a vintage which has not been equalled since and a vintage where the rewards of patience are and will continue to be very fine indeed. The wine was aged for nine years in Pol Roger’s famously deep cellars, kept at a constant 9 degrees, the perfect natural ambiance for gentle autolytic ageing and the nurturing of an exemplary equilibrium and a very fine and persistent mousse.
And as with all great things, fools rush in and the winemakers at Pol Roger, needless to say, are far from foolish. Indeed Cellar master Dominique Petit, formerly of Krug, is regarded as one of the greatest winemakers in the region and he knew from the out-set that the wine would need an unusually long cellaring before release. This, to borrow a phrase from another friend of Pol Roger, is his finest hour, thus far… The blend is a traditional one of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay; after the double-débourbage (cold-settling) the first fermentation is in stainless steel, kept relatively cool. A full malolactic fermentation ensues, followed by the second fermentation in bottle and then the lengthy slumber beneath Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. The bottles are hand – tuned by remueurs, the prestidigitatory efforts of whom ensure the completion of yeast autolysis and ensure a blameless richness and length on the palate.{***}{region}Champagne{region} {color}White{color}

2005 Champagne Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne, Blanc de Blancs, Brut
2005 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is finely aromatic, a rich and creamy Blanc de Blancs at its very best. Although the 2005 can be enjoyed from release, a decade of patience will be well rewarded.
When Pierre Taittinger first discovered the Champagne region, he was a young officer during the First World War. He returned several years later to invest his energy into developing a family-owned independent Champagne house in Reims which is still managed by the Taittinger family today.
Francois Taittinger chose Chardonnay as the dominant grape as he believed that modern tastes would increasingly appreciate the lightness, finesse and elegance of the Chardonnay grape in their flagship offering - Comtes de Champagne - first produced in 1952.
“We will never produce a large quantity of Comtes de Champagne because the technical characteristics we require so that this cuvée can be a very great wine are essentially unique in Champagne and very financially demanding.
The Comtes de Champagne displays an eternal youth derived from our province’s greatest Chardonnay, a triumphant blend of force and elegance. Connoisseurs will appreciate it.” Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger

Although Chapelle du Clos is pitched as the “second wine” of Champagne Cazals, it is an altogether different expression of its unique terroir to their “tête de cuvée”. Crafted from 50-year-old vines which were grown on raw chalk, this wine is a pure expression of Oger. Champagne Penet-Chardonnet’s Les Fervins is another rare gem of the region: 2010 yielded several special vintage releases across Champagne, of which this is one. Unusually, vines were a mix of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, located in a hallowed site signposted by an ancient metal cross. It is this cross that gives this domaine its emblem. The two types of grape were harvested and vinified together, encapsulating the unusual terroir. The wine spent 11 years on lees. Drink now – 2040.

106 months on lees, disgorged May 2012. Very fine bead. Very bready nose with gorgeous breadth. Very solid and as though you can taste every single element picked up from that sediment over its nine years in the cellar. A lovely potpourri of aromas. Still lots to chew on. Very dry finish. I would guess zero dosage in this wine. All its richness comes from age. Long and layered. Not too fizzy. So delicate yet so complex! Another very serious wine. With potential. - Jancis Robinson MW

This, quite simply, is one of the finest Non Vintage Chardonnay Champagnes that one is likely to find, rather like Krug Grande Cuvée in its multi-vintage Grand Cru assemblage and its encyclopaedic complexity. Aged on lees for over ten years, the Hommage is rich and exotic on one level, with plenty of nutty depth, but also wonderfully fresh, linear and precise.
