2018 Berry Bros. & Rudd Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir by Au Bon Climat
We are proud to collaborate with the highly regarded winemaker Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat for our Own Selection Santa Barbara Pinot Noir. The 2018’s blueberry and dark cherry aromas combine with a juicy core of brambles and pepper spice that are intrinsic to the style of Au Bon Climat. Benefiting from coastal influence, the wine’s racy acidity provides a wonderful backbone that is supported by luxurious, silky tannins.

2018 Berry Bros. & Rudd Pauillac by Ch. Lynch Bages
Pauillac is perhaps the finest of Bordeaux’s great communes. With this 2018 vintage, we continue our long relationship with the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages. The wine displays all the hallmarks of these great Cabernet vineyards; the nose is dominated by dense cassis and bramble fruit, with a hint of warm cedar and spice from 10 months in barrel. The palate is broad and ripe but has the classic structure typical of good Claret. Layered and complex, this is wonderful with a Sunday leg of lamb or a midweek casserole.

2014 Ch. Léoville-Poyferré, St JulienThere is fleshy, tasty fruit here, and a lovely intensity on the nose. The bouquet is beautifully expressive and laced with sweet, dark fruits. Cassis and dark fruit continue to dominate on the palate, the crunchy tannins a welcome arrival. The wine is very dark, and you can sense an underlying power, even though it doesn't express itself that way, yet. A wine to be cellared for several years, it will reward those with patience. Well balanced, harmonious and, dare I say it, a classic Poyferré.

2011 Ch. Ormes de Pez, St Estèphe
Eight years on, the 2011 Ormes de Pez is starting to really open up. The nose is intensely spicy, with savoury cedar notes and brooding dark fruit. There’s an almost floral edge to its aromatic profile, with something that hints at eucalyptus (perhaps a nod to the coolness of the vintage). The palate is smooth and lush, its age – and time in oak (15 months) – tells, with layers of leather and spice joining the core of black fruit. The chalky tannins and mouth-watering acidity call for hard cheeses or roast lamb. Drink now to 2021.

This Bourgogne Rouge from Domaine Guyon is made exclusively from vineyards in Vosne; it’s a lot more structured than most wines at the generic level in 2017. The 100% whole-bunch house style is obvious, making for a generous red with an appealing line of freshness and purity. Drink now to 2023.

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin, Benjamin Leroux
This is another important cuvée for Ben and it demonstrates his ability to capture the essence of a village’s character with, it seems, almost minimum effort. Everything was de-stemmed this year and, yes, it’s immediate and authentic, but also delivers more complexity than is at first evident. Notes of lavender and sweet peony, and a more schoolmasterly structure. Drink 2022-2028.

This is a very well-situated vineyard just on the north side of the town of Nuits. Vougeraie has the centre of the vineyard, known as Clos de Thorey, although there isn’t actually a clos. 2018 Sadie Family Wines, Columella, Swartland, South Africa
“The percentage of Syrah decreases every year - it was once 80% and is now closer to 45% - allowing Eben Sadie to play with other Mediterranean grapes, namely Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca. Remarkably well balanced and refined given the heat and dryness of the vintage, this is a scented, floral, nuanced red with red cherry and mulberry fruit, fine tannins and a lift of stony minerality. One of the best ever Columellas. 2023-32.” 98/100 Tim Atkin MW

2015 Mullineux Granite Syrah, Swartland
This violet-perfumed Syrah is the most elegant of our single-terroir Syrahs. The palate is medium to full bodied and delicately spicy, with a silky texture balanced by a fresh, natural acidity. There are notes of black pepper, violets and lilies, red berries and herbs. Best served at 16 to 18 °C, this wine will greatly benefit from decanting if drunk within the first 3 to 5 years after bottling.

2018 Berry Bros. & Rudd, Sonoma County Chardonnay by Ramey Wine Cellars
We’re proud to be working with winemaker David Ramey on our first own-label Sonoma County Chardonnay. From the 2018 vintage, this wine has an attractive, ripe stone-fruit nose, with aromas of orange blossom, ginger and citrus zest adding complexity. Time in French oak has contributed layers of toast and spice, and is generously supported by lively, crisp acidity and a subtle hint of struck match.

2018 Chassagne-Montrachet, Embazées, 1er Cru, Benjamin Leroux
This is a higher vineyard in Chassagne, on the appellation’s southern border. The soil is poor and stony over limestone. This Chassagne is riper than an equivalent Meursault this year, with an extra 0.5% potential alcohol, despite being harvested on the same day. But there is plenty of detail in the fruit and a lush, unctuous finish. Drink 2023-2029.

A cinnamon, nutmeg and peppery nose immediately thrusts the spicy signature of rye into the forefront of the conversation, with the savoury palate and moreishly dry finish confirming this impression. 1989 Ch. Talbot, St Julien
The 1989 Talbot has fine attack on the nose: red cherries, bergamot tea and pressed rose petals developing from the glass, maybe they just miss the cohesion and sophistication of the 1986. The palate is medium-bodied with rather harsh, edgy tannin. Notes of black tea and tobacco infused the red fruit with a grainy -textured finish that shows just a touch of dryness on the aftertaste that makes me think it might be better to crack this open sooner rather than later. - Vinous

2019 Rully Rouge, La Chaume, Jean-Yves Devevey
This is from a sector of the same vineyard as the blanc, with reddish, ferrous soil. Both grapes and stems ripened beautifully: Jean-Yves could thus vinify this cuvée whole-bunch. Once again, we’ve worked with the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages. Benefitting from the same terroir and techniques as their much-loved grand vin, this blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc is wonderfully fragrant, with layers of cassis and blackberries underpinned by sweet cedar spices and a core of graphite. 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Petits Clos, 1er Cru, Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard
The 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Petit Clos (a lieu-dit within Morgeot) was more backward on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, touches of white flower infusing the citrus fruit that need encouragement, but appear well defined. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry with touches of bitter lemon and dried quince, impressive weight towards the finish and a long sustain. This is an excellent Chassagne from Caroline L'Estime.

2018 Nuits-St Georges, Clos de Thorey, 1er Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie
Sylvie Poillot, General Manager, farms the estate’s 42 hectares biodynamically. “We do this to preserve the fertility of soils, and to have a very good balance between the soil and the plant’s health,” she explains. It’s not just the soil health that’s changed: two decades on from their conversion to biodynamics, the wines are evolving too: “The wines are more aromatic and more expressive year after year,” she says.
Vougeraie has a huge three hectares here; half the vines are young and half over 50 years old. This is a wine of real aromatic intensity, with plenty of perfume and a touch of ground coffee. The palate is very juicy with a creamy, luxurious texture and a long, fine finish with layers of powdery, salivating tannin. Drink 2022-2028.

2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Pauillac by Ch. Lynch Bages
For the 2020 vintage, we continue our long relationship with the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages. The nose is bright and fragrant, with notes of cassis, brambles and wild cherries. The palate brings more wild-berry complexity and a warming note of cedar spice from the oak barriques used during maturation.
True to its Pauillac origins, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend. Merlot was particularly strong in 2020; the higher proportion than usual (36%) brings a subtle roundness to the palate. This is an approachable yet wonderfully elegant expression of Pauillac.
