Based in Vosne-Romanée, Jean-Pierre Guyon is one of the star growers of Burgundy, producing wonderful wines across his range, from simple Bourgogne to complex and powerful Clos de Vougeot. While his top Grands Crus fetch high prices, he also lavishes as much care on his less fashionable appellations such as this Savigny-lès-Beaune. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2006 and Jean-Pierre knows his vines inside out, spending long days in the vineyards ensuring he gets perfectly ripe fruit. 2011 is a vintage which is drinking beautifully now. Les Planchots is a well-drained vineyard situated on sandy, gravel soils which give the wine a fine, delicate tannic structure. The 2011 is delightfully pale in colour, with a beguiling nose of crushed wild strawberries and a touch of sous-bois. With air the wine unfurls in the glass, gaining in freshness and energy; for this reason, Jean-Pierre recommends decanting all of his wines to allow them to open up and fully express themselves. The palate is delightfully energetic, with delicate red berry fruit and a touch of mushroom and sweet spice. Perfectly mature, this is the perfect partner to poultry, feathered game and hard cheeses.
